DIAGNOSIS OF BRUCELLOSIS AND LEPTOSPIROSIS IN RUMINANTS BY THE VETERINARY RESEARCH INSTITUTE, IPOH

Brucellosis and leptospirosis are two important zoonotic diseases in ruminants which lead to abortion and cause  high economic losses. The data on routine samples submitted from all over Malaysia, for diagnosis in the Veterinary Research Institute in 2009, was analysed to evaluate the current status of brucellosis (caused by Brucella abortus ) and leptospirosis (Leptospira  sp). Samples were from sheep, goats, deer, buffalo and cattle submitted by the state veterinary services for routine diagnosis of these two diseases.  A total of 46,593 animals were tested for Brucella abortus and 1,753 animals were tested for Leptospirosis.  Farms with a positive results are considered as infected farms in which appropriate actions need to be taken to control the disease.  It was found that 92.2% of 1,648 ruminant farms were positive for Brucella abortus while only 7.8% of the farms were positive for leptospirosis.     The high number of infected farms indicates that these diseases are easily spread especially with the movement of animals for trading.  The test method used for brucellosis is the Complement Fixation Test (CFT) and for Leptospirosis, the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) was used.  In terms of the number of animals affected; 3.9% of the animals were positive for  Brucella abortus out of a total of  46,593 animals tested and 34.6% of the animals were  positive for Leptospirosis out of 1,753 animals tested.  In both diseases, cattle have a higher number of positive cases compared to other species.  As these diseases are zoonotic, control and eradication of these diseases is of utmost importance to stem their spread.
