SURVEILLANCE OF RABIES BY THE VETERINARY RESEARCH INSTITUTE (VRI) FROM 2006-2010

Rabies is one of the most feared zoonotic diseases in the world. All warm-blooded animals are susceptible to infection by the virus. It is a fatal viral encephalitis and results from infection with viruses belonging to the genusLyssavirus. Animal Rabies Surveillance Programme in Malaysia was initiated by Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) under OIE guidelines in 1998.The main objective for the rabies Surveillance Program is for Malaysia to gain a rabies-free status. A total of 3,088 brain samples were collected and tested using the routine tests (Fluorescent antibody test (FAT) and histopathology (for biting case) carried out at VRI,Ipoh. However from the year 2006-2010 no positive cases detected.
