PROGENY TESTING OF DAIRY SIRES ON MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT FARMS

Good genetic response rates are achieved through the application of animal breeding techniques on dairy herds (Smith, 1988). In the tropics, the evaluation of dairy sires is usually difficult due to the inadequate numbers of daughters per sire and the variable breed composition of dairy cows. In Malaysia, the government has had large dairy cattle breeding farms, each having in excess of 500 breeder females at any one time. The management on these farms was well standardized and computerized production and breeding records were available for all cows. Further, artificial insemination was being practiced on these farms. Given these special circumstances, an investigation was conducted to appraise dairy sires through progeny testing and in the process, devise suitable methodology to evaluate dairy sires in the tropics.
