PREVALENCE OF HELMINTHIASIS IN RELATION TO CLIMATE IN SMALL RUMINANTS IN PERAK IN 1998 AND 2008

This is a prevalence study ofthe correlation, pattern and comparison ofhelminthiasis cases in small ruminants inrelation to the weather conditions in Perakin the year of 1998 and 2008. Helminthiasisis annually diagnosed at the ParasitologyUnit of VRI. Due to the global warmingand climate changes, there is a need toknow the effects of weather, if any, onthe increasing trend of helminthiasiscases diagnosed in the districts of Perak. The methods applied for the diagnosis ofhelminth in faecal samples from sheep andgoats were McMaster, fl oatation and larvaeculture methods. In this study, animals withfaecal egg counts (FEC) of 500 e.p.g andabove are considered as positive helminthcases. Rainfall data is correlated to thefarm location in each district and furtheranalysed according to parasitologicalstatus. Generally, humidity and rainfall arehigh throughout the year, however, furtheranalysis of data does not show signifi cantcorrelation between helminthiasis andrainfall in the state. High humidityconditions contribute to the survival ofinfective larval stage of helminths such asHaemonchus contortus and this may be thecause for high helminthiasis cases in somedistricts in Perak. Comparison betweendata in 1998 and 2008 showed highernumber of helminthiasis in 2008, whichmay be due to higher population of smallruminants in that year. Therefore, furtherresearch should be conducted to investigatethoroughly the relationship and the effectof weather on helminthiasis. Anthelminticresistance study is also conducted to helpfarmers reduce helminthiasis problems inthe farms. Keywords: Helminthiasis, smallruminants, weather, rainfall, FEC
