MOLECULAR CHARACTERIZATION OF FUSION AND HEMAGGLUTININ NEURAMINIDASE GENES OF NEWCASTLE DISEASE VIRUS ISOLATED FROM PIGEON IN MALAYSIA

Two Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) were isolated from imported pigeons in 2006 and 2011 respectively. This study is to characterise the isolates from imported pigeons and comparable to other NDV isolated in Malaysia. Both isolates were partially sequenced based on complete fusion (F) and hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) genes and phylogenetically analysed. The results from the phylogenetic analysis showed that the isolates from pigeons were subgrouped under class II, genotype VI subtype VIb. Furthermore, the genetic analysis of the genes found that F gene at the F cleavage site displayed the motif of 112R-R-Q-K-R-F117and HN gene showed no extension of amino acid at the carboxyl terminus and maintained the length of 571bp indicating presence of virulent determinant in the genes. Findings from this study revealed that genotype VI subtype VIb has not been reported before and could be a new genotype in Malaysia. It demonstrated the presence

of virulent strain of NDV in imported birds.
