GENETIC ANALYSIS OF NEWCASTLE DISEASE (ND) VIRUS FROM IMPORTED PET BIRDS AT QUARANTINE STATION (PENINSULAR MALAYSIA) IN 2011

Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is highly contagious and economically diseases of poultry. The 4 positive NDV strains were isolated from imported birds at Quarantine Station, Peninsular Malaysia in 2011. The amino acids sequence of the Fusion (F) cleavage site reveals that the all the isolates were categorized as virulence viruses, with cleavage site motif 112R-R-Q-K-R116 or 112R-R-R-K-R116 at C-terminus of the F2 protein and Phenylalanine (F) at residue 117 at the N-terminus of the F1 protein. The phylogenetic tree revealed that two (2) isolates belong to the genotype VIa, one isolate belong to the genotype VIb and genotype VIId respectively. Vaccination of uninfected birds is the best method of protecting pet birds against ND.
