ESTIMATING THE BODY WEIGHT OF SHAMI (DAMASCUS) GOAT USING BODY MEASUREMENTS

Introduction

Measurement of various body conformation are very useful in judging the weight of live goat and also very helpful in developing suitable selection criteria (1). Farmers use questionable methods such as eye-estimating or lift the animals by hand to estimate their weight due to unavailability of weighing scale at their farm, leading to weight inaccuracies. Estimating the live weight using body measurements is practical, easier, faster and cheaper (4). Although there have been reports on weight prediction by using body measurements by several authors in many breeds (1-11), different models might be needed to predict body weight in different environmental conditions and breeds. Hence, the aim of this study is to determine the best fitted regression model for prediction of live weight of Shami (Damascus) goats in Malaysia using different linear body measurements.
