ANTIVIRAL ACTIVITY OF AQUEOUS NEEM BARK EXTRACT AGAINST HIGHLY PATHOGENIC AVIAN INFLUENZA VIRUS H5N1

Neem plant or Azadirachta indica is famous for its medicinal properties against fungi, parasites, inflammation and virus. In this study, toxicity and antiviral activity of aqueous neem bark extract were tested against Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) virus H5N1. Different concentrations of aqueous neem bark extract tree were tested for its toxicity and antiviral activity against HPAI H5N1 virus determined via in vitro virus inhibition assay in embryonated chicken eggs and on non-porous stainless steel carrier or penicyclinder. Antiviral activity of neem bark extract against virus

concentration of 10 to 1000 EID50 was at 0.2mg/ml whereas virus concentration of 10000 EID50 was at 2.0 mg/ml. Virus inhibition on stainless steel carrier was at 7.5mg/ml of neem bark extract. Therefore, in this study, it showed that neem bark extract did have the antiviral activity against avian viruses of economic importance.
