An Avian reovirus (ARV) which has similarity with the divergent chicken reovirus strain from Hungary was isolated in Malaysia from Arbor Acres Plus broiler chickens. Femurs and swollen hock joints of Arbor Acres Plus broiler chickens with clinical signs of lameness and bilateral or unilateral swollen joints with morbidity rate of 0.02% were analysed for virus isolation. The ARV was detected via both viral isolation and molecular detection.  The agar gel precipitation test (AGPT) was also positive for ARV using specific antiserum against ARV. The nonstructural protein sigma NS gene of the ARV was successfully amplify and sequenced via reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and sequencing analysis, respectively. Basic local alignment search tool (BLAST) and phylogenetic analyses showed the ARV isolate was grouped into cluster ARV strain T1781. The sequence of the ARV strain T1781, which has been isolated from a broiler chicken with a central nervous system disorder in Hungary, is differed from other chicken ARV strains in the GenBank which include the ARV strain 1133, duck reovirus, turkey reovirus and other chicken reovirus. Interestingly, although the Malaysian isolate was grouped in the same cluster as the Hungary strain, only clinical signs of lameness and swollen hock joint were seen in the chickens. Clinical signs of central nervous system disorder were not observed. A complete sequence of this isolate can be performed through whole genome sequencing (WGS) in order to fully understand the differences between the Malaysian and the Hungarian ARV, the origin of the virus and how the virus was introduced to our country.
